Dataset description

This table gives an overview of the expenditure on regular education in the Netherlands. The government finances the educational institutions and pays for research that they have carried out by universities. The government provides study funding, school allowance, a fee for educational facilities for young people and childcare allowance to households (students and/or parents) and grants grants to companies and non-profit institutions. In addition, the government receives funding for education from the European Union, reimbursement of school costs and interest and repayments on student loans and the government recovers overpaid study funding. Households pay tuition and tuition fees, parental contributions and school activities contributions to educational institutions. In addition, households must purchase books and materials and have costs for the use of public transport between home and school (insofar as this is not subsidised by the government). In addition, households may have expenses for homework counselling and tutoring. Also, interest and repayments on student loans and over-received student funding and reimbursement of school costs must be reimbursed to the government. Households receive childcare allowance, reimbursement for educational facilities for young people with disabilities, reimbursement of school costs, student funding and scholarships made available by businesses. Companies and non-profit institutions incur costs for the guidance of trainees and pupils who combine learning and work, contribute to the cost of work-related training of employees and spend money on research that they have carried out by colleges and universities. In addition, companies contribute to the childcare allowance and give scholarships to students in higher education. Companies receive subsidies and tax schemes from the government to encourage them to make apprenticeships and internships available and to provide student transport. Organisations abroad pay educational institutions for conducting research. The European Union provides funding and grants for education to educational institutions and the Dutch government. Foreign governments contribute to international schools in the Netherlands that operate under their nationality. Statistics on education expenditure are compiled on a cash basis. This means that education expenditure and revenues are allocated to the year in which they are actually spent or received. However, the activity or transaction associated with the expense or receipt may take place in another year. The table also contains several indicators that are (inter)nationally used to compare expenditure on education and to place them in a broader context. The indicators are compiled on the basis of provisions of the CBS and/or the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development). All figures presented are calculated according to the OECD’s standardised definitions. CBS published the revised National Accounts in June 2018. Among other things, GDP and total government expenditure have been revised upwards as a result of the revision. Data available from: 1995 Status of the figures: The figures in this table from 1995 to 2019 are final, the results for 2020 are provisional. Changes as of 28 December 2021: The preliminary figures for 2020 are included. The figures for 2019 are now final. When are new figures coming? The new figures for a given year will be published in December of the following year. These annual figures are provisional because some data sources are not yet (fully) available. The provisional figures will be adjusted after the availability of new or updated sources. The final figures are placed exactly one year after the provisional figures.
