In order to safeguard and develop nature values, the Rijks aims to realise a coherent network of high-quality nature areas: the Ecological Main Structure (EHS). The EHS must be realised in 2018. The ecological main structure is a coherent network of existing and to be developed important natural areas. These are the basis for nature policy. Next, the main ecological structure is made up of core areas. The exchange of animals between different core areas takes place through ecological connecting zones. Ecological connection zones connect important nature areas with each other. They also ensure that animals can move freely from area to area. One component of the system (of the EHS) is the robust connections. These connections are intended to strengthen spatial cohesion and ecological quality within the EHS, but can also contribute to other functions. The current EHS policy, as stated in the Environmental Vision, the Ecological Connection Zones and the Robust Connections (listed on map 4 of the OGV) is continued.
