This publication provides information on voters, turnouts and votes cast per municipality with regard to the election of the House of Representatives of the States-General, 15 May 2002.
The members of the House of Representatives of the States-General shall be elected directly, i.e. the elect shall be appointed by vote.
Since 1917, the Netherlands has been elected according to the system of proportional representation, until then the district system applied. The number of MPs was initially 100 but was increased to 150 in 1956.
The general men’s suffrage was introduced in 1917, and women’s suffrage was established in 1919. From that year onwards, all Dutch residents who have reached a certain age are in principle entitled to vote.
Since 1983, Dutch citizens living abroad also have the right to vote for the House of Representatives. The minimum age for the right to vote fell to 18 in 1972, after that age had changed from 25 to 23 in 1946 and in 1963 from 23 to 21.
The Constitution of 1917 introduced the obligation to vote to be removed from it in 1922. The Electoral Act knew the obligation to turn, but it was abolished in 1970.
