This table presents economic data for the environmental sector by industry. This concerns the volume of labour, the production and the added value of the environmental sector. The activities and related industries falling within the environmental sector are further attributed to environmental domains (environmental protection and/or management of natural resources).
The economic data are presented in the following quantities: — Volume of labour in working years, 1000 FTE
— Production in basic prices, million euros
— Value added in basic prices, EUR million
— Exports in basic prices, EUR million
The environmental sector consists of companies and bodies carrying out activities related to measuring, preventing, limiting, minimising or correcting environmental damage to water, air and soil, and/or dealing with problems related to waste, noise and ecosystems (OECD, 1999;Eurostat 2009).
This definition also covers “cleaner technologies” and “cleaner products and services” that reduce environmental risk and minimise the consumption of natural resources and pollution. The definition of the environmental sector has been adopted at European level and is applied as such by EU countries.
The table is part of the environmental accounts. The environmental accounts quantify the relationship between the economy and the environment.
In order to achieve a consistent statistical description of this relationship, environmental accounts are aligned with the classifications and definitions of the national accounts.
As a result, environmental figures from the environmental accounts deviate from the environmental figures elsewhere on CBS website in a number of cases.
