This table presents economic data for the environmental sector. The volume of labour, production and added value of the environmental sector are discussed in this table. Production and value added are measured in basic prices and labour volume is measured in working years (active persons).
The environmental sector consists of the group of companies and bodies involved in measuring, preventing, limiting, minimising or correcting environmental damage to water, air and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise and ecosystems (OECD, 1999; Eurostat 2009). This definition also includes “cleaner technologies” and “cleaner products and services” that reduce environmental risk and minimise the consumption of natural resources and pollution. The definition of the environmental sector has been adopted at European level and is applied as such by EU countries.
The group of companies and bodies belonging to the environmental sector can be divided by sectors. In this table, only those companies carrying out environmental activities as their main activity or ancillary activities are attributed to the industries. The internal environmental activities carried out within the Dutch industry are not attributed to the industries in this table. These internal activities are therefore presented separately. The activities falling within the environmental sector can also be subdivided into environmental domains.
The economic data of the environmental sector mentioned above are presented in the following quantities:
— Volume of work in working years, employed persons
— Production in basic prices, million euros
— Value added in basic prices, EUR million
