The figures in this table are based on sound maps published on the Atlas Environment of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The table shows the percentage of people exposed to noise (by exposure category, measured in decibels) for road and rail traffic. The figures are available in full day (‘Lden’) and night (‘Lnight’) at neighbourhood, district and municipal level.
The figures should be used with caution. When drawing up the sound maps, attempts are made to approach reality as closely as possible, but the figures remain estimates of the actual noise load and may vary locally. Although the percentages are given with one decimal accuracy, the decimal is only indicative and given only in order to achieve a correct rounding in a calculation. The maps and therefore this table are not suitable for testing against (legal) noise standards, but give an indication of the noise load and exposure and are intended as a screening tool.
