This table provides insight into the start and flow of households in the housing market.
Of all vacant homes (both new and existing dwellings) involved in one year by new residents, the table shows whether the new residents are starting or flowing households. The underlying assumption is that starting and flowing households often have a different position in the housing market and partly other housing preferences. The dwellings are distinguished according to the ownership of the property concerned and the property of the previous home. The possibilities and desire to enter a property for sale, rental property of a housing corporation or a rental property of another landlord will partly depend on a number of characteristics of the household. This table shows the characteristics of the household’s age, income and household composition.
About half of all people who move to a new address in the Netherlands each year do so to an empty home. The other half consists of people who move in to an existing household or move to an “other living space” (e.g. a nursing home). The table only includes data from households moving to an empty home.
