Dataset description

This table contains data on the (final) balance sheet of the general government sector. This provides insight into the assets, debts and assets of the government. The assets consist of financial assets (e.g. loans) and non-financial assets (such as housing). Debts plus assets are the liabilities of the balance sheet. Balance sheet items are generally valued at market value. The market value shows the amount for which an asset can be sold. If there is no market for an asset, the best possible approach to the market value is given. Financial balance sheet items that are not traded on the market such as currency, deposits, loans, trade credits and transitoria are valued at face value. The terms used are in line with the National Accounts. The National Accounts are based on the international definitions of the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010). To increase the accessibility of the table, in some cases more common descriptions are used instead of the terms from the National Accounts. The relevant National Accounts term is then mentioned in the notes. The data presented corresponds to the publications on the National Accounts and the Government Accounts respectively. Data available from 2001 to 2016 Status of the figures: The most recent reporting year 2016 has provisional status, the reporting years 2015 and earlier are final. As this table has been discontinued, the data will no longer be definitive. Changes as of 17 June 2019: None, this table has been discontinued. When are new figures coming? No longer applicable. This table is followed up by the government balance sheet; assets and liabilities. See paragraph 3.
