Dataset description

File with abandoned cemeteries. The cemetery whose original settlement has disappeared or moved is called a “forgotten cemetery”. This category includes both cemeteries that are still visible, as well as cemeteries that have disappeared or whose underground still contains remnants of burials and possibly churches. Old cemeteries are now especially important for reconstructing the history of Fryslân’s habitation, because they inform us about former settlement sites. Most of the abandoned cemeteries are located in (former) peatlands.
