This table shows the average number of children per woman, the percentage of women by child number and the average age of the mother at the birth of her first child. All figures are based on the birth generation of the woman. The figures refer to the population of the Netherlands.
Data available: from birth generation 1935
Status of the figures:
The figures based on the numbers of births observed up to and including the year 2019 are definitive. This means that the figures up to and including birth generation 1969 are based entirely on observations. Figures from 1970 birth generation have been complemented by future expectations of fertility figures from the CBS Population Forecast 2020-2070. The figures from birth generation 2005 are based entirely on forecast figures.
Changes as of 16 December 2020:
None, this is a new table in which the previous forecast has been adjusted based on the observations now available. The forecast period now runs from 2020 to 2070. This new table incorporates the figures relating to birth observations up to and including 2019.
When are new figures coming?
The frequency of appearance of this table is one-off. In December 2023, a new table showing the (prognosis of) key birth figures will be published.
