A land weather is a late medieval (often 14th or 15th century) earthen shore that was built to secure the territory outside a settlement. Land defences are about two meters high — and including dry canals on either side of the shore — four to ten meters wide. The earthen ramparts were planted densely with thorn bushes and lamewood or sometimes with palisades. In this way, they posed significant obstacles to unwanted visitors. Most of the remains of land defences lie in Limburg and on the sandy soils of Gelderland and Overijssel. A large part of the approximately 100 land defences in the Netherlands has completely disappeared.
