Map with the former landfills that have high potential to be redeveloped.
What are former landfills?
These are landfills that have been deposited in a (very) past waste. As a result, the soil is contaminated. How serious this pollution is is not always known. In general, the risks are low, so there is no need to clean the soil.
Information on redevelopment
About 150 former landfills are directly suitable for redevelopment. The other 940 have been redeveloped over time. The aim is to include former landfills at an early stage in the decision-making processes of an area development. That’s how we deal smarter with our space. The suitability of the sites depends on the design plan and the environment of the landfill. Various locations can be made suitable for, for example, solar energy, or the installation of windmills, housing or business parks.
Redevelopment of a former landfill puts new technical requirements, for example:
• The quality of the top layer
• The load capacity
• Dewatering
The measures to this end also improve the quality of the environment on and around these landfills. And that means environmental gains.
