A nature-friendly bank is a bank that is designed in such a way that besides the water-repellent function, the ecological and landscape function has also been taken into account. An important feature is the natural transition from wet to dry: usually, nature-friendly banks have faint taluds where a clear vegetation is visible.
Over the past twenty years, hundreds of kilometres of nature-friendly shores have been laid out in rural areas. In the coming years, there will be many kilometers. The Water Framework Directive has given a huge boost to the construction of nature-friendly shores, and is still doing so. It is considered to be an effective measure to improve the ecological functioning of waters. Other motives for the construction are improvement of water quality, shore defence and landscape reinforcement.
