This table contains data on the number of detainees imprisoned in a penitentiary establishment around 30 September. The table contains both criminal detainees and persons in detention. The number of detainees is divided by type of establishment, country of birth of the detainee, residence permit and length of sentence. Furthermore, the data are broken down by the sex of the detainee, the age of the detainee and the type of offence.
The transition from 2001 to 2002 shows a trend break in the distribution to crime. The reason for this is that in the years up to 2001 the first offence was counted from the registration, whereas in the years from 2002 the offence was the most serious criminal threat. In 2003, the characterisation of the establishment in which the detainee resided changed. This led to a shift in the figures from prison to home from detention compared to previous years. The increase in the number of detainees in 2004 is partly due to the introduction of multi-personnel cells in October 2003. From 2004 onwards, the places purchased by the Prisoner from the Directorate for Special Provisions (founded in 2003) will also be included.
As of 2011, three new types of establishment will be used, namely Management Problematic Detainees Department (BPGA), Additional Care Facility (EZV) and Penitentiary Psychiatric Centre (PPC). These device types can be assigned both the “House of Detention” and “Prison” destination, which is why these device types have been added to the category “Other furnishing types”.
To prevent identification of individuals, the figures in this table are rounded to five.

Changes as of 15 March 2018
None, this table has been discontinued. In the context of the cuts resulting from the Rutte II cabinet, CBS had to make substantive choices in the statistical programme. As a result, as of 2018, there will be no funding for this statistics.
