In addition to municipal names, there are place names in the Netherlands.
This table gives an overview of the place names in the Netherlands in 2002.
A large number of place names are in use in the Netherlands. These places do not always coincide with municipalities, partly due to municipal reclassifications. Places that used to be independent municipalities can now be part of a larger municipality.
Places include villages, hamlets, neighbourhoods, ribbon buildings, larger urban districts (mostly older cores, garden villages or more recent expansion areas). The table also lists the names of large industrial sites, air and sea ports and clearly recognizable polders.
This table allows users to locate names of places by municipality, by economic-geographical area and by province.
In addition, it is possible to verify whether the name of a place corresponds to the place names included in the Geographic Base Register established for postal purposes (the PTT residence name)
