The Signalering Map peat oxidation signals which areas in the province of Zuid-Holland (strongly) are susceptible to peat oxidation. For different types of space use, the groundwater level is controlled in the Netherlands. For example, cows sink into the peat if the soil is too wet. However, level control has the effect of lowering the ‘dry’ peat soil above the groundwater level; by sagging the soil and oxidising organic matter. For example, subsidence and groundwater level end up in a vicious circle: the soil drops, the level has to be lowered, the soil drops... and so on. The peat oxidation map shows where the soil is (strongly) susceptible to decline due to peat oxidation.
