This map concerns an inventory of former orchards from the period 1940-1980 in the province of Zeeland. During this period, DDT was used as a plant protection product in fruit production. As a result, increased concentrations of DDT are regularly found in the soil in former orchards from this period. This map shows whether during these periods a plot was in use as an orchard.
The inventory is based on old topographic maps from different years. These have been explored with an intermediate period of about 10 years. Overall, the data are based on reconnaissance around 1940 (usually year of reconnaissance 1936), around 1960, around 1970 and around 1980.
The orchards are included in separate GIS files per region/island and merged into a single total stock.
The orchards-Beveland file also contains information about orchards from the topographical map of 1990 and current orchards. This more recent information is not included in the above-mentioned total stock, which contains only the orchards from the period 1940-1980.
The stock of orchards-Beveland was compiled in 2003 for the soil quality map of the municipalities of Goes, Kapelle, Reimerswaal and Noord-Beveland, drawn up on behalf of DLG Zeeland. The file of the municipality of Borsele was compiled in April 2009 for the purpose of updating the soil quality map of the municipality of Borsele (on behalf of the municipality of Borsele). For the other municipalities in Zeeland, the orchards were inventoried in 2010 on behalf of the province of Zeeland.
