This table gives an overview of the development of the threat posed by animal groups in the Netherlands. This is done by comparing the “length” of the so-called Red Lists.
A Red List is a list of endangered species with the degree of threat per species. Three Red lists of mammals, birds and butterflies have been published, from around 1994, 2005 and 2012.
All three lists compare the situation of that year with that of 1950. When the threat increases, the “length” of the list becomes longer, as the threat decreases. The length of the 1994 Red Tables is set to 100. A value 104 in 2005 means that the threat has increased by 4 % in that case.
The “length” of the Red List is not only the number of endangered species on the list, but also a measure that includes the degree of threat. For more information, see Chapter 4. Sources and methods.
Data available for: base period 1950-1994, 1950-2005 and 1950-2012.
Status of the figures:
The figures are for now.
Changes as of 6 February 2014:
The figures for mammals, birds and butterflies for the period 1950-2012 have been added.
The figures for amphibians and reptiles are missing for the last two periods, because they still have to be (re)calculated. Temporarily, the figures for these two periods have been set to ‘data missing’, indicated by a point. These figures will be published in the September 2014 update. The totals now relate only to the animal groups: Butterflies, Birds and Mammals.
When are new figures coming?
No longer applicable. This table has been discontinued due to significant changes in the structure of the table. This table has been replaced by a new table entitled ‘Red List Indicator; Endangered Animals and Plants’. See paragraph 3 for a reference to this table.
