In this table you will find the total number of kilometres travelled by the Dutch population (excluding home residents) on Dutch territory in one year. These passenger-kilometres are broken down by mode of transport. These are all modes of transport used: if a journey to work was successively by bike to the station, by train and walking to the office, then all three modes of transport (drives) are counted separately.
As a basis for calculating the number of passenger kilometres per year, the research results of the Relocations Research in the Netherlands (OViN) were used. In the total number of passenger kilometres by mode of transport, both the kilometres of regular journeys and those of professional journeys (excluding those of the lorry) have been taken into account. For example, professional journeys are made by taxi drivers and parcel delivery agents. Apart from the OViN survey, a model estimate of passenger kilometres on domestic holidays has been made. Addition of these domestic holiday kilometres to the passenger-kilometres from OViN shows the estimated total number of passenger-kilometres by residents of the Netherlands on Dutch territory in one year, as shown in this table.
Please note: the occupational journeys and estimated passenger-kilometres on domestic holidays are not included in the other tables on mobility on Statline. This is because there is a lack of sufficient information about these movements.
Only the kilometres on Dutch territory count. This means that cross-border movements at the border have been cut off and therefore the kilometres travelled abroad have not been taken into account.
Data available from 2010 to 2017.
Status of the figures:
The figures in this table are final.
Amendment as of 19 February 2020:
None, this table has been discontinued.
Change as of 30 August 2016:
A small correction (increase) of the passenger-kilometres as a car driver for reporting year 2015 has been made: some professional car journeys had previously not been recorded incorrectly. In addition, some other figures have been adjusted at least for 2015 due to rounding differences.
When are new figures coming?
No longer applicable. This table is followed by the table: Total transport performance in the Netherlands; modes of transport, regions. See paragraph 3.
