Water can be stored in many places. In this file, the drainage possibilities are illustrated by the large rivers. This is considered the maximum amount that can be safely stored in the large rivers.
The stock gives the maximum drainage capacity of the Rhine Branches and Meuse on which the so-called Measuring high water levels (MHW) are based. It therefore indicates the amount of water that should be discharged safely through the rivers. It gives an image of the distribution (in m³/s per branch) as distributed at a discharge of 16.000 m³/s at Lobith and 3.800 m³/s at Eijsden. It is not equal to the really maximum drainage capacity at every point on the rivers. In reality, lateral inflows from the regional system on the rivers must also be taken into account. This ensures that the drain can be higher locally.
