“Defense digital avalanche overlay” shows areas where avalanches can occur. All areas are collected in a database where mapped surfaces are either shown as “explosion area for avalanches” (zone 1) or as “expiration area for avalanches” (zone 2). In Zone 1, the terrain is steep enough for an avalanche to be triggered. Some steep areas may be left out in the database because the forest is so dense that the possibility of landslides is considered small. Zone 2 is the terrain below the triggering areas and can be reached by landslides. The map does not provide information on how often landslides occur. In some areas, there are yearly landslides, while in other places there can be many years between each time avalanches are triggered. There may also be landslides from smaller hangs that are not specified in the database.
It is important to emphasise that safe traffic must always be based on assessments made on site and cannot be done on the basis of avalanche maps alone
