Area type is a map layer or property with its own presentation rules in the national data set AR5. The map layer shows the main types of land resources on a scale 1:5000 in areas below the forest border. Land use types are classified on the basis of criteria for vegetation, natural drainage and cultural impact. The data set is adapted to use on scales from 1:5000 to 1:20 000. AR5 is derived from the earlier fields in Economic Mapping. Property/column in the data set to be used to produce the map layer is called ARTYPE in SOSI format and area type in gml and gdb format.
Legal property values according to the code list are: 11- Built-up; 12 — Transport; 21 — fully cultivated land, 22 — surface-grown land; 23 — grassland grazing; 30 — Forests; 50 — Open Landmark; 60 — Myr; 70 — Snow glacier; 81 — Freshwater; 82 — Sea; 99 — Not mapped. Area less than two acres is usually not separated as a separate figure. Agricultural land is separated down to 0.5 acres. The requirement for location accuracy is two meters. Area in square meters is listed under AREA_C. Municipalities are responsible for continuous updating. Forests and landscapes make periodic updates every 3 years. Data is downloaded as county or municipal files.
There is no need to download the data set more than once to produce all the map layers in the dataset.
