Los is a common terminology for public services with a user-oriented vocabulary. Los currently consists of around 400 keywords and has over 1,500 help words (synonyms, past topics, etc.) that can be used for recognizable categorisation of content and resources across portals and to help users find their way.
There are several ways to use the Los Vocabulary. The most nearby is to refer to URIs for the terms when classifying a resource in a linked data environment. The standard for description of data sets and data catalogs is an example of applications where Los should be used primarily as reference to themes using URIs. Los can also be downloaded locally and used as a structure such as public websites. If the information contained in the RDF/XML file is included in the source code for the pages, this will contribute to increased searchability as Los offers description in several languages and target forms as well as help words.
Note that translations into other target forms and languages are not complete. It will be possible to contribute to more translations directly in [vocabulary source code on Github](https://github.com/Informasjonsforvaltning/los).
Each term has a stable and globally unique http-URI. The URIs are built with the following structure: http://psi.norge.no/los/tema/{term}. The URI for the term ‘work’ is thus ‘http://psi.norge.no/los/tema/arbeid’ and this gives an answer in rdf format.
An html view of the term is achieved by adding.html as suffix. Link to html view for the same term is ‘http://psi.norge.no/los/tema/arbeid.html’ The rewriting rules in the URIs for special Norwegian characters and spaces are: æ -> ae ø -> oe to -> aa (between) ->—
Example: http://psi.norge.no/los/tema/natur-og-miljoe In Los, the main categories, subcategories and keywords are a SKOS concept. These are in relation to each other either in a hierarchy or some other form of relationship.
