The MAF1951-80v1.0 represents the oldest agricultural and forestry historical cartography for Continental Portugal with information on land use and occupation of agricultural and forestry focus for the period 1951-1980, the type of forest, the dominant species, and other characteristics of the agricultural settlement or occupation, in vector format and compatible with the COS series nomenclature.
The MAF1951-80v1.0 resulted from a process of digitisation and vectorisation, and later combination, of the historical cartography of the Second National Forest Inventory (1968-80) and the Second Agricultural and Forestry Charter of Portugal (1951-78), having been the Center for Applied Ecology “Prof. Baeta Neves” (CEABN-InBIO), the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA/ULisboa), the Directorate-General for the Territory (DGT), and the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) the entities responsible for its production. The MAF1951-80v1.0 cartographic information is in vector format and divides the space into landscape units (polygons) that share the concepts of land use and occupation, not including any linear or punctual elements.
The MAF1951-80v1.0 has a minimum cartographic unit (UMC) of 0.2 ha and the equivalent scale is 1:25 000.
The nomenclature consists of an a posteriori and non-hierarchical classification system, and has 6531 combinations of soil occupations/uses.
Each polygon of MAF1951-80v1.0 is classified with the combination of occupations/uses of the soil according to the homogenisation of the original paper cartography, and corresponding class of the COS nomenclature. The limits of the MAF1951-80v1.0 at the border with Spain and the sea are those of the Official Administrative Charter of Portugal (CAOP) version 2020.
