AIR QUALITY IN ROMANIA IN 2014
Ambient air quality assessment is regulated by Law 104/2011 on ambient air quality transposing Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe and Directive 2004/107/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air.
For 2014, the assessment of ambient air quality in Romania was carried out permanently through 138 automated stations that are part of the National Air Quality Monitoring Network (R.N.M.C.A.), distributed throughout the country, as follows:
48 urban and suburban background stations for the assessment of the background level of
pollution for urban and suburban areas;
55 industrial stations for assessing the input of emissions from industrial sources;
27 traffic stations to assess the input of traffic emissions;
8 rural background stations for assessing the background level of pollution for rural areas.
The stations shall be equipped with automatic analysers that continuously measure the concentrations in ambient air of the following pollutants: sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO2, NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), benzene (C6H6), ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2,5). They are supplemented with laboratory equipment used to measure concentrations of heavy metals: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), particulate matter and deposition.
Below are summarised data and information on the results of air quality monitoring in 2014, illustrating air quality in relation to limit values, target values, alert or information thresholds set out in the specific legislation for each pollutant.
The graphs are made on the basis of measurements carried out in automatic air quality monitoring stations, in compliance with the data quality objectives set out in Annex 4 of Law 104/2011, while using the aggregation criteria and the calculation of statistical parameters, according to Annex 3, B.1 and D.2 of Law No 104/2011.
