On 29 September 1997, the Republic of Slovenia signed the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, which was ratified by the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia on 19 January 1999 (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 7/99). The Joint Convention entered into force on 18 June 2001. In accordance with Article 3 of the ratification act, the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning — Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Nuclear Safety is responsible for the implementation of the Joint Convention.
Pursuant to Article 32 of the Joint Convention, the Parties shall draw up and present a national report on the safety of spent fuel management and the safety of radioactive waste management for each review meeting. The interval between review meetings shall not exceed three years. The report must be drawn up seven months before the review meeting. In the run-up to the preparatory meeting, the Parties shall review each other’s reports and prepare questions relating to the review of the reports to be answered at least one month before the review meeting.
The national report collects information on the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel, data on the inventory of radioactive waste and spent fuel, the acquis relevant to this area of work and the scope and manner of fulfilling the obligations under the Joint Convention.
