A river basin district is the basic unit of water management in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and the Water Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 67/02 and Rev.) River Basin District (RBD).
A river basin district is a defined area which comprises one or more adjacent river basins, together with the associated groundwaters and the sea, and is the territorial basis for water management.
The river basin districts in the Republic of Slovenia are defined in the Rules on determining the boundaries of river basins and sub-basins and the boundaries of river basin districts with 1st order waters to which they belong (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No 82/03). Two river basin districts are defined — the boundary between the Danube river basin and the Adriatic Sea basin runs along the hydrographic watershed and is equal to the border between the Sava river basin and the Soča basin and the Adriatic rivers.
