The Ossa Morena database is the result of several projects carried out jointly by the following bodies:
— The Dirección General de Minas and the Spanish Geominero Technological Institute contracted the national company Adaro to carry out the projects called “Preliminary Study for the implementation of a database in Ossa Morena” in June 1992 and “Completion and use of the Ossa Morena database” in October 1993.
— Minas de Almadén y Arrayanes S.A. (MAYASA) contracted Minas de Almadén and Arrayanes S.A. (MAYASA) to carry out the project entitled ‘Ossa — Morena — I.- Eastern Area Telesensing Database’ in September 1992.
In July 1993, the Ministry of Industry and Tourism of the Government of Extremadura contracted the research project ‘Implementation of a geological mining database of the Ossa-Morena area’ to Minas de Almadén y Arrayanes SA (MAYASA).
During that period of time (1985-1992) a number of mining projects on State Reserves were carried out in this area, covering a large part of the area studied and where current research methods were used, with positive results in the metal-genetic knowledge of the Ossa Morena area.
The project comprised three distinct phases:
A first, consisting of the collection and analysis of the geological and mining information available.
A second consisted of the application of remote sensing techniques in a large area in the central part of the Ossa Morena area, allowing, on the one hand, spectral characterisation of the various materials entering the work area and, on the other hand, the carrying out of the textural study and the structural analysis of the lines of the LANDSAT image.
— And, thirdly, the creation of a multidisciplinary database that would enable the large amount of information available to be sorted and handled and could also be used as a methodological tool for surveying the area.
The database was entered in SIGMA in 1995, when the versions of the final database were delivered.
