Dataset description
The Geological Map of Spain, at scale 1: 50.000 (MAGNA) carried out between 1972 and 2003, is the essential basis for the development of products and activities related to geological, hydrogeological, mineral resources, natural risk, and in general with any action on the physical environment.
In 1993, an agreement was drawn up between the Consejería de Industria, Comercio y Turismo de la Junta de Andalucía and the Spanish Institute of Technology and Geominero for the digitisation of the leaves corresponding to the territory of Andalusia of the National Geological Map at the level of 1: 50.000.
The main objective of the Agreement is to obtain the digital mapping of the geological, topographic and altimetric map contained in the corresponding sheet with an exact geometry to the edited map, and to obtain a digital sheet including all the elements of the edited sheet: Geological map, geocronological and lithostratigraphic legend, legend of conventional signs, tectonic, geological or any other diagrams, geological cuts, etc. The final result is a sheet of composition similar to the edited sheet and map identical to the edited cartography.
The geological map is divided into sheets on a scale of 1: 50.000, showing the geological information contained in that sheet.
Geological information comprises the different chronol-stratigraphic units of the area of the corresponding sheet separated by different types of contacts, normal or contiguous, dyscoring and mechanical or intrusive. The tectonic structure is presented by the maps of the folds, the orientation and bugging of the flat and linear elements contained in the rocks, as well as by the structural relationship, through faults and winches, between the cartographically differentiated rock assemblies. It also shows the unique characteristics of the igneous rocks, as well as the degree of migmatisation of metamorphic rocks. Additional information includes water springs, or soundings, deposits and mineral signs, presence of fossil fuels and other spot portions. The map is accompanied by the lithostratigraphic legend and conventional signs, and geological cuts and tectonic diagrams.
The digitisation process was carried out in blocks corresponding to areas defined and carried out successively over time by the Regional Government of Andalusia, some others by the Spanish Institute of Technology and Geominero. There are some differences between the blocks, which have been corrected by standardisation work.
