Dataset description

Sections of rivers classified from Spain according to the modified Otto Pfafstetter method (hydrographic classification). The identification of the network of rivers to be classified and the limitation of river basins to the river sections following the Pfafstetter method, has been carried out using as starting data the river network of cartography 1:25000 (BCN25) and Digital Land Model (MDT) of the IGN. All rivers in cartography 1:25000 have been classified except for those less than 1 km without a name. The classified rivers constitute a unifilar network with connected and complete topological. They are reference information since being classified allow referencing, locating and analysing hydrological information, being of particular importance for hydrological analysis. The result of this classification gives rise to a new hydrographic division, with the following large basins, called Ottocuencas: A1003 North Atlantic; A1004 Duero; A1006 Tajo; A1008 Guadiana; A1009 South Atlantic; M2001 Southern Mediterranean; M20002 Júcar; M2003 Medium Mediterranean; M2004 Ebro and M2005 Northern Mediterranean; M01 to M08 Balearic Islands; A01 to A11 Canary Islands, M220 Melilla and M221 Ceuta. The methodology applied to obtain this information and its application for the hydrographic classification of rivers in Spain according to the Pfafstetter method has been developed by CEDEX. The detailed information is contained in Monograph M-133 “Hydrographic Classification of the Rivers of Spain” edited by the Center for Publications General Technical Secretary. Ministry of Public Works.
