Dataset description

The catalogue of earthquakes of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) contains a list of earthquakes that occurred in Spain and nearby areas, whose existence has been verified by the study of historical documents or by the analysis of instrumental data (registered by the seismic network of the IGN or by other contributing networks). In this catalogue, information about its seismic source (origin time, hypocentral location, magnitude) and its effects (maximum observed intensity) are collected for each of the earthquakes. In addition, each of the earthquakes may have additional information related to: seismic phases, focal mechanism, macroseismic intensities, shaking maps, seismic reports, etc. The temporal extension of the earthquake catalogue ranges from 880 BC to the present day. This catalogue is in continuous evolution, since on the one hand earthquakes that occur in Spain and nearby areas are added, typically in less than an hour after their occurrence, and on the other hand earthquakes already existing can be added or modified at the time when new information about them is found. The IGN earthquake catalogue is available to the public and can be found on the website: http://www.ign.es/web/ign/portal/sis-catalogo-terremotos.
