Dataset description
This report contains and presents the evolution of criminality in Spain recorded by the State Security Forces and Corps (National Police and Civil Guard), the dependent Security Forces and Corps of the Autonomous Communities (Ertzaintza, Mossos d’Esquadra and Navarre Foral Police), and also by those Local Police Corps that provide data to the Statistical Criminal System.
This balance sheet is a compilation of criminal offences registered not only at national level, but also disaggregated by Autonomous Communities and provinces. It also includes the crime data of those provincial capitals and localities with a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants (according to the official registry of the National Institute of Statistics as of January 1, 2015), and the data corresponding to the island territories of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife, Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca, and Menorca.
Regarding the criminal typologies contained in the Balance Sheet, it is worth recalling the amendment implemented by the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT) in September 2015 with the aim of matching them with the new International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) of the United Nations.
Thus, this Balance sheet relates the crime indicators corresponding to the following categories: Crimes and Fouls (EU), Painful Homicide and Consummate Killings (EU), Robbery with Violence and Intimidation (U.S.), Domestic Strength Theft (EU), Motor Vehicle Abduction (EU), Drug Trafficking (EU), Harms and Hurts. This will ensure that statistical data are consistent with those of the United Nations, which will improve the coherence and international comparability of crime statistics and improve the capacity for analysis, both at the national and international levels.
