Dataset description
The Quarterly Criminal Report breaks down the data according to criminal offences, offences and misdemeanours, recorded not only at national level, but also by Autonomous Communities and provinces. Data are also provided for provincial capitals and localities with a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants (according to the official registry of the National Institute of Statistics as of January 1, 2013). The third and fourth quarters of 2014 also include statistical crime data for the island territories of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife, Eivissa, Formentera, Mallorca, and Menorca.
The quarterly report on the evolution of crime is based on data provided by the State Security Forces and Corps (National Police and Civil Guard Corps), the dependent Security Forces and Corps of the Autonomous Communities (Ertzaintza, Mossos d’Esquadra and Navarre Foral Police) and those Local Police Corps that provide data. In this way, the data presented show an image more consistent and approximated to the reality of the incidence of crime in Spain.
The safety indicators specified in this document comprise different categories: total number of crimes and misdemeanors, wilful murders and consummate murders, violent crime, robbery with violence or intimidation, theft with force, theft of motor vehicles, drug trafficking, damage and theft. The indicators that have in brackets the acronym “EU” correspond to the crime indicators used by the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT).
