Dataset description
The Crime Balance Sheet collects and presents the quarterly evolution of crime recorded in Spain by the State Security Forces and Corps (National Police and Civil Guard), the Forces and Security Corps dependent of the Autonomous Communities (Ertzaintza, Mossos d’Esquadra and Navarre Foral Police), and also by those Local Police Corps that provide data to the Statistical Criminality System.
This report is a compilation that disaggregates the data on criminal offences — crimes and misdemeanours — recorded not only at national level, but also disaggregated by autonomous communities and provinces.
In addition, together with the detailed territorial data, the crime data of those provincial capitals and localities with a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants are included (according to the official registry of the National Institute of Statistics).
However, it should be noted that the information extracted throughout this report also contains data for island territories. Specifically, those corresponding to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife, Eivissa, Formentera, Mallorca, and Menorca.
The safety indicators specified in this document comprise different categories: total number of crimes and misdemeanors, wilful murders and consummate murders, violent crime, robbery with violence or intimidation, robbery with force, robbery with force in homes, theft of motor vehicles, drug trafficking, damage and theft. Some of these crime indicators, in short, those that have in parentheses the acronym “EU”, correspond to those used by the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT).
