Cerebrovascular disease (CIE-9: 430-434,436-438; ICD-10: I60-I69)* was the leading cause of mortality among women and accounted for 11 per cent of all deaths. Since 1990, mortality from this cause had an average annual decrease of 3.7 per cent. Mortality in the CAPV followed a clear geographical pattern, being higher in the northwest of the community. In general, Álava had a lower mortality than the rest of the CAPV.
