The Specially Protected Areas of Importance for the Mediterranean are a set of protected coastal and marine areas that guarantee the survival of the values and biological resources of the Mediterranean; they contain ecosystems typical of the Mediterranean area or habitat of endangered species that have a special scientific, aesthetic or cultural interest. They are declared under the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona, 1976). It includes the Protocol on Specially Protected Areas and the Biological Diversity of the Mediterranean (1995) which creates an international protection figure, the Specially Protected Areas of Importance for the Mediterranean (ZEPIM). The geographical data comes from the Autonomous Communities and Cities, the associated database is adapted to the data model established for this information in the Nature Data Bank. In May 2006 geographical data were created and the last update due to modifications to the limits of Alboran Island was made in May 2010.
