A water catchment area is delineated ultimately by a surface watershed and covers both the surface of the land and the surface of the lakes of the demarcated area. All surface run-off from the area has a common outlet at a given point in a watercourse. The catchment area is defined by the upstream area to this point.
The product, based on version SVAR 2016:6, contains 23,804 polygons representing catchment and catchment areas for all discharge points for Swedish water bodies of type RW, LW and CW (watercourses, sea and coastal water bodies). For each water body, the sea and/or sub-basins are pooled upstream up to the point of discharge of the next water body.
The product also includes an Excel table, https://opendata-download.smhi.se/svar/VARO_2016_6.xlsx, of the drainage system of the water bodies and the sub-basins and sea basins.
