Areas of activity are geographical areas that are reported with information on the number of employees, the number of places of work, the sector and the area within the areas.
An area of activity may consist of either a concentration of several workplaces, which together form a geographically defined area, or an area characterised by large-scale and industrial land use with at least one site. An area of activity is at least 3 hectares.
Examples of areas of activity are airports, mines and excavations, industrial areas, business parks, technical facilities and logistics, or areas of higher education, universities and healthcare facilities. Areas of activity are complementary to trading areas and these two types of area do not overlap.
Areas of activity may overlap with other types of geographical areas from SCB, such as agglomerations and small towns. Areas of activity are published from 2015 onwards and are scheduled to be published every five years. Activities replace non-urban workplaces, which were developed for the years 2000, 2005 and 2010.
