Knowledge of inland sandlands — Natura 2000 types of rice sand heaths (2320) and grass sand heaths (2330) — distribution and prevalence in the country is poor. In order to gain a better understanding of the occurrence of these habitats in the country, a mapping has been carried out with aerial interpretation of infrared aerial images against a background of different mapping layers. The mapping was limited to areas located within a zone of 5 km from the coast within the continental and boreal biogeographical region. A special mapping was made of beaches along the six large lakes. All already known inland sandlands (NNK and TUVA) have also been aerial image interpreters. In connection with the aerial image interpretation, calibrations were made in fields in Jönköping County, Västra Götaland County and Dalarna County, both already known inland sands and new identified in the aerial image interpretation.
A total of 798 grass sand heaths and 150 rice sand heaths have been mapped. Previously there were 141 objects with grass sandhed and 46 objects with rissandhed mapped in NNK and TUVA. The areas are spread throughout the country.
The assignment was carried out by ProNatura and described in more detail in the report “base mapping of inland lands in Sweden, Accounting of assignments”, NV Dnr NV-03273-13.
