Dataset description

The ant type regions describe the prevalence of predominant ant types in Sweden. The four regions developed in connection with the Wetland Inventory (VMI) are: palsmyr region, aapamyr region (with subregions), high bog region, pine mosse-beach wetland region. The map also shows the approximate distribution of the mountain ant type, which was not included in the VMI inventory. The regions are based on the current distribution of marshes according to the VMI and have not been taken into account that human activity may have influenced to some extent the marshes’ distribution. It should also be stressed that borders are not absolute but should be seen as transitional zones from one region to another, which in practice makes it difficult to draw an absolute razor-sharp border. The Swedish ant region borders match the boundaries that have been made to our neighbours. The division into ant regions is quite different from the division into natural geographical regions and also a great deal from the division into vegetation zones. This shows that the basics of the division into natural geographical regions and vegetation zones are not entirely consistent with what affects the presence of marshes in the country. Some main features of the demarcations are, after all, similar, especially the boundary between boreal and boreo-nemoral zone corresponds approximately to the border between aapamyr region and high-mosse region. In the future management of marshes, one might imagine using this new subdivision in ant regions instead of having natural geographical regions as a base.
