The dataset “groundwater levels time series” reports measured groundwater levels and information about the locations where levels are measured within SGU’s groundwater network. The purpose of the groundwater network is to study temporal variations in the amount and nature of groundwater, in relation to geology, topography and climate. Information on, for example, soil type, topographical location and type of aquifer is of great importance in assessing the variation patterns of groundwater levels. SGU has been measuring groundwater levels since the late 1960s. The results of the measurements are useful for reference purposes, forecasting, environmental control and resource calculations. When using level data for reference purposes, it is important that the site-specific characteristics of the groundwater network are similar as far as possible to the location relevant for comparisons and that the climatic conditions are similar between the sites. Groundwater levels are measured 1-2 times a month in just over 300 observation tubes, grouped in about 70 areas. At a small number of stations, measurements are made automatically with pressure sensors. The dataset contains all level data and it should be noted that the quality of data varies. Before data is used, for example, the quality should be checked by plotting measured groundwater levels.
