The data product Räl is a visualisation of the physical rails in the railway network.
A rail is the rail of steel that the railway vehicle rolls on. The rail has several functions; above all, to support the weight of the train sets and distribute it to the base as well as steering the wheel axles. Another important feature of rail on electrified tracks is to be the carrier of signal for line blocking (see more in Data Product Specification Line Blocking). The rail is also a reconductor medium for the return currents of the train operation.
Since the physical rail has so many functions, it is important to have high-quality data about the object.
The object type Räl provides information that is required, in particular, for inspections and maintenance work. Inspections, for example, check that the rail is not worn out, which would cause safety risks when driving a vehicle on the track.
The data product has stretch distribution and connects to the network with reference to the nearest previous node and nearest previous kilometre board with distance in meters in the direction of the track link, indicating the side position of the object relative to the direction of the track link (right| left).
