DESCRIPTION
This data set contains ground parameters for real-time analysis and forecast data from the last two runs of the AROME forecast model. The XAM25H2_* files contain post-processed so-called ground fields specified for a certain height above the ground.
The model runs 00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC. The first file is the analysis file and then follows 60 forecast files, one for each time step.
AROME is a numerical forecasting model that describes weather trends in time and space. The model has been developed in international cooperation involving a large number of European countries.
The forecast is based on what the weather looks like at a certain point in time, the so-called initial state. In order to map this, an analysis of the weather situation is carried out. In doing so, an earlier forecast is modified to better match current observations. This is done by a variety of methods. Thus, the value of the different forecast parameters can be determined in a grid. In the model, these squares are currently 2.5 x 2.5 km horizontally and the atmosphere has been divided into 65 levels vertically.
Eight forecasts are made per day, but only four (runs made at the main semesters 00, 06, 12 and 18UTC) are used for forecasting purposes. The others are only used to update the analysis to the next main semester run. Each main future forecast extends up to just under 3 days forward in time. Every 3 hours a day a three-dimensional mapping of different weather parameters is made. The survey is made to determine conditions in the soil, but not least to describe what it looks like in the atmosphere. It may concern temperature, humidity, wind, air pressure, cloudiness and precipitation, but also e.g. radiation conditions, the distribution of sea ice or the water content of snow. All of this is important for the development of the weather.
The AROME analysis is carried out over an area covering Scandinavia, the northern part of the continent and the Baltic States.

USE
At SMHI, AROME is used as a basis for forecasts in radio and television. It is also used for forecasting commercial customers such as various newspapers and municipalities. Data from AROME can also be used as input to other models. This applies to meteorological as well as hydrological and oceanographic
