The Göta River Valley is one of Sweden’s most affected areas. Several major walks have taken place in modern times and our mapping of landslides shows that many areas along the Göta River continue to have a high risk of treading.
On behalf of the Government, the hazards were mapped along the entire Göta river including the Nordre älv 2009-2011 against the background of the needs to handle increased flows in the river in the future. The mission mapped both the current situation and the change that is taking place as a result of climate change. The assignment also included improving and developing methods for mapping and evaluating the risks. The assignment has entailed an overall risk analysis with calculations of the probability of slipping and the assessment of the consequences that had occurred can give rise to. By identifying different risk areas, an assessment has been made of where geotechnical reinforcement measures should be carried out. An overview of the cost assessment of the geotechnical elements of the reinforcement measures has been carried out for areas with high scale risks. Furthermore, an overall assessment of the geotechnical conditions for increased flows in the Göta River is presented.
In April 2012, the so-called Göta River Mission (Gäu) was presented in the form of three main reports — 1.Societal consequences; 2.Creating; 3.Maps (33 A3-blade 1:10,000) — and 34 technical interim reports. See also www.swedgeo.se and http://www.swedgeo.se/upload/Publikationer/Gota%20alvutredningen/GAU_slutrapport_del3.pdf (Part 3 maps). Risk is a combination of the probability of slipping (qualified geotechnical assessment work based on a large amount of digital data, including a detailed terrain model for land and river) and the consequence of a slide (taking into account life/population, property values, transport infrastructure, energy and telecommunications distribution, environmentally hazardous
activities etc.). Reporting is carried out in accordance with the directives of the government assignment and according to current technical and geotechnical analysis models.
