DESCRIPTION
The dataset contains historical model data from the NEMO-Nordic forecast model. This means that only data for the first time step have been selected. Forecast data not included.
Nemo-Nordic NS01 is an oceanographic forecasting model that describes the state of the sea for a number of physical parameters.
Every 6 hours a 60-hour forecast is run based on data assimilation of available observations. Until March 2017, the meteorological forecast model HIRLAM (C11) was used, followed by the meteorological forecast model Arome and the ECMWF forecast model and river data from the hydrological model HYPE. A forecast is made for water temperature, salinity, currents, water level and ice.
The area covered by NEMO-Nordic is the entire Baltic Sea, the west coast of Sweden (Kattegat and Skagerrak), the North Sea and the English Channel.
When using water level data, offset data shall be corrected because the model’s zero level is not the same as the water level for the area. The offset correction is made on the basis of observations for the current time period. The correction shall be carried out continuously for each station, as they have different reference levels.
One method of offset correction is to use a continuous mean seawater level for a few days back in time.
COORDINATES
The coordinates of the area are given by the corners:
South-west lazy: 48.5, lon: —4.1
North-west lazy: 65.9, lon: —4.1
Northeast lazy: 65.9, lon: 30.2
South-east lazy: 48.5, lon: 30.2
The grid panes are 1 nautical mile (approx. 2*2 km). Please note that the area north of the North Sea (approximately 59.3) is not part of the grid.
USE
At SMHI, data from NEMO-Nordic is used for water level warnings, ice forecasting and various investigations. Nemo-Nordic data is also used as input to other models. One example is the SeatrackWeb oil spill model. Nemo-Nordic is also used as input to other oceanographic models via the international BOOS collaboration.
FORMAT
Data is delivered in GRIB format. Information that facilitates use can be found at:
