The soil species map shows the distribution of soil species in or near the soil surface, as well as the presence of blocks in the soil surface. Soil species are divided by method of formation and grain size composition. Superficial soil layers with a power of less than half to one metre and soil layers in depth are reported in some cases. Some landforms, such as moraine backlands, moraine ridges and air dunes, are also reported.
The purpose of the soil species map is to provide the basis for analysis of groundwater conditions, dispersion of soil and groundwater pollution, soil stability, erosion, buildability, natural values and other soil-related issues. The information in the map can be usefully used for the production of various thematic products, such as groundwater vulnerability, soil permeability, erosion sensitivity and water conditions. The information is the basis for SGU’s printed earth maps and various map services.
The survey has been carried out using different methods, varying geographical data and for presentation scales from 1:25 000 to 1:100,000. This means that there are major differences in quality within the product, both in terms of location accuracy and the classification of soil types. The differences in the mapping method used in the survey are reported by the fact that the information has been labelled as different map types.
