Cropping Areas (SDAs) represent the best agricultural land in Switzerland. To be classified as SDA, agricultural land must meet a number of criteria. Each Swiss canton must maintain an SDA quota. The quota for the canton of Jura is set at 15'000 ha. A basic study was carried out in 1986 by the Agricultural Institute of Zürich-Reckenholz for the cantonal master plan (precision map 1:25'000) They classified the SDAs into 3 categories according to their quality 1-2 -3. Only SDAs 1 and 2 are represented in this layer. As soon as an SDA passes within the perimeter of the building area it disappears from this layer even if it is not built. SDAs are frozen and archived annually. In order to improve the accuracy of SDAs 1 and 2, a new entry of data based on land cover and 1:25'000 maps of 1986 was carried out in 2018. This update of the cantonal inventory was validated by the Federal Office for Territorial Development (ARE) in 2020.
