The aim of cantonal cycling planning is not only to define the cantonal cycle network, but also to highlight the places where facilities are needed to improve the safety of cyclists, so that they can be taken into account in road project planning or road maintenance. Thus, the bicycle sector plan includes GIS data of two types: — the hierarchical cantonal cycle network highlighting the cycling potential, — the cantonal planning of the cycle network showing the places of intervention and the corresponding types of measures. The “Hierarchised Cantonal Bicycle Network” highlights the importance of links in relation to the utilitarian cycling potential and the presence or non-existence of cycle tourism routes. It was established on the basis of the adapted base cantonal cycle network following the analysis of the cyclo-conformity of the network (integration of the carry-overs of identified routes). The cantonal planning of the cycle network highlights, at the cantonal level, the links requiring intervention as well as the a priori cyclo-compliant sections. It serves as a reference basis for the planning of cycling developments and the detailed studies to be carried out during road projects or maintenance planning. This planning was adopted by the Council of State in December 2018.
