Automatic cycle counters, installed at over forty sites in the city, record the number of bikes that pass over the counter loops.
Inductive loops (metal detectors) in the cycleway (or highway) record cycles passing over them by direction and by hour of the day.
The data is used to monitor scheme implementation and trends in cycling numbers in order to help understand the effectiveness of policy measures.
Data in this dataset is split by calendar year and includes the id of each counter. For further information on the counter please see the file called "Site Reference" in this same dataset. For a __map__ displaying locations of the counters please see [__this other dataset__](https://data.yorkopendata.org/dataset/cycle-counters-locations).
