Selected data sets about children in need and care based on two official statistical returns by the Department for Education that are published annually. The first is called "[Statistics: children in need and child protection](https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/statistics-children-in-need#characteristics-of-children-in-need)". The second is called "[Statistics: looked-after children](https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/statistics-looked-after-children)".
These data sets can be interrogated through a range of tools including the [DFE Local authority information tool](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/local-authority-interactive-tool-lait), a new [experimental DFE tool to support a range of data sets relating to children](https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics), and the Children's Commissioner benchmarking tool called [CHLDRN](https://www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/chldrn/).
